“For who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. They are the eyes of the LORD, which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”

Other versions of the Bible talk about “the day of small beginnings”. The decision to start digging yourself out of debt is exactly this—a day of small beginnings. It can look as though it is meaningless because you may not see the fruits of your labour for months or even years. But the Lord REJOICES because He knows that this is the start of something POWERFUL. For some of you, this is the start of shaking off the chains of BONDAGE—mental and emotional bondage which has rendered you powerless and taken you off the path that God had for your life.

A plumb line is a weight suspended on the end of a string. It hangs straight down and gives a builder an exact and perfect vertical line to use when creating a frame for a structure. God talks a lot in the Bible about being a builder—about laying cornerstones (building foundations), building houses on rocks and sand, building temples, having holy upper rooms, and dwelling (living) in houses of righteousness.

Having a plumb line is an indication of “true north”. It is a straight and perfect line. There is no better line to be had in all of the earth. It is the best standard. There are other places in the Bible which mention a plumb line and it has been interpreted as righteousness. Righteousness is about doing what is right—about having ethical behaviour, about following God’s precepts.

In the book of Ezra, Zerubbabel was the governor of Judah. History has recorded that he laid the foundation for the Temple. He was given sanction to rebuild the Temple and return the sacred Temple vessels that Nebuchadnezzar II had preserved after the conquest of Babylon. He was restoring the holy place of the Lord.

It’s not that big a leap to say that you are restoring the holy place of the Lord if you are taking back the control and authority of your debt and your financial situation.
